A summer internship is an excellent opportunity to try out a career field, gain experience and knowledge, as well as build skills and network during your summer holiday period. Potentially you may also receive a job offer afterwards!
The summer internship program goes for approximately 12 weeks on a full-time or part-time basis. It may be designed for academic credits if required. If you are planning to do an internship or are already undertaking one, have a look at the 5 tips we have prepared for you to get the most out of it:

1 – Set your internship objectives

Before starting your internship, it is important you set your career objectives. By doing so you will know exactly where you want to go and can create a plan to get there. At Australian Internships, we provide support on interns’ Letter of Objectives so we will find an organisation which will provide the knowledge and the resources to achieve your goals. Your Internship Program Supervisor will also guide you during your internship to make sure you keep on track of your learning goals.

2 – Get to know your co-workers

Introduce yourself to everyone at your company and try, gradually, to contact each person and get a sense of what they do - even outside your department. This will help you better understand the business culture and objectives.
Strive to communicate efficiently and effectively, learn from co-workers, offer support, make questions, ask for feedback and advice. It is also important to stay in touch after your internship and you can do that by adding them into your LinkedIn account. They may also recommend you for the skills and abilities you have demonstrated throughout your internship experience.

3 – Be open to new tasks and challenges

Take the internship opportunity seriously: be professional, punctual and be prepared for the new. Be open to new tasks, team activities and challenges - do not be afraid of it. That is a real chance to build your resume. Be proactive, have a positive attitude and be grateful for it.

4 – Show your skills and abilities

During your internship, you will have many opportunities to show you skills and abilities and then get to better know yourself. Enjoy this process of building your skills, either in the area that you study or the so-called soft skills such as teamwork, communication or time management for example.

5- Create a portfolio of your achievements

Have a list of the tasks you have been working on or make notes of your duties and main projects. This will help you to have a clear idea of your achievements. You can use this to update your resume, sell your abilities to future employers and also create a portfolio showcasing your work. Finally, reserve a time to reflect on your experience, learning outcomes and what needs to be improved.
