Students and graduates often face the dilemma: how do I get experience if I do not have any?

Most entry-level jobs nowadays require that candidates show some type of experience in their field of study - and competition is tough. Besides academic knowledge, transferable skills and voluntary experience, employers look for candidates who can also demonstrate they will transition well into the workplace - and have a proven track record of that. Internships often serve this purpose allowing you to show a list of real tasks and achievements that can impress prospective employers and make you stand out from the crowd.

Below we have selected 6 reasons why you should participate in an internship program:

1 - Gain Real Experience

Differently from other voluntary positions and types of training, an internship gives you the practical experience most employers want to see you’ve got. You will have a chance to put into practice the skills and knowledge you have gained at Uni and be involved in real projects – with real challenges and outcomes.

2 - Learn from Others

You will be surrounded by experienced professionals who can teach you and guide you throughout your internship. Observe people working, interact with them, ask questions and try to get as much relevant information as you can! Real professionals are the best teachers you can get.

3 - Develop your Confidence and Soft Skills

An internship will help you to build your confidence through practical activities like public speaking, project presentations, or suggesting new ideas. You will also develop new skills based on your relationship with others, the so-called soft skills, such as communication, empathy and teamwork.

4 - Find Yourself and Get Feedback

The internship will give you a good idea of what to expect in your field. It will help you to identify the tasks you like the most, your abilities and preferences. So ask questions, learn from mistakes and don’t be afraid to expose your ideas. You also will receive feedback which will allow you to understand which tasks you perform better and what aspects need to be improved.

5 - Build a Network and Get Endorsements

Make connections with your colleagues – beyond your department. You will learn about different aspects of the company, have a broader understanding of the entire operation, and maybe even make friends for life! Establishing good work relationships might help you land a job or get a recommendation that will make a difference in the future.

6 - Improve your Resume

Show how the internship helped you get exposure into a certain field or industry, list the tasks you have completed, your achievements and highlights of your experience. This will keep your resume at the top of the recruiter’s list!

Starting a career is not always easy, requires a lot of effort and getting out of the comfort zone is necessary at some point. If you’re struggling to get started, get in touch with us and see how an internship can be a life-changing experience - and an investment towards a successful career!
