1. photo identification card

Australia doesn't require by law to carry proof of identification (ID), but you may find it useful to carry one instead of your passport. If you’re an international student coming to Australia, it’s crucial to have the right identification (ID) documents so that you can prove both who you are and how old you are.

Queensland - Photo ID /  Photo Card

You can apply in person for a photo identification card at a transport and motoring service centre, participating Queensland Government Agency Program Office (QGAP), or a police station that provides licensing services.

To apply for the card you must:

-be at least 15 years of age;

-complete the photo identification card application (F4772);

-provide evidence of identity;

-pay the fee.

You may need to have your photo taken when you apply for a photo identification card. You will not receive your card straight away, it will be sent to you by mail by standard post.

When you apply for your photo identification card you will be asked if you want your residential address to be shown on the back of your card.

Photo identification cards and adult proof of age card holders can add or remove an address on their card online or in person.

They will post your photo identification card by standard mail to your mailing address within 14 days. If you have signed for e-reminders, they will email you when your photo identification card is on its way.

5. Tax Claim Service with Taxback.com

Who?

Australian tax law requires all non-residents who earn any income from Australian sources to file a tax return – even if you are just working temporarily. Australian citizens and residents who earn above the $6000 tax-free threshold are also required by law to file a tax return. Failing to file in either case can lead to penalties and fines.

What?

Filing a return tax form is not all bad! The average refund after filing an Australian income tax return is $2500! Plus anyone who earns over AU$450 per month will also be able to apply for a superannuation refund too. The average super refund is $3380!

When?

The tax year in Australia runs from July 1st to June 30th (also called Financial year). Tax returns should be completed each Financial year.

What you need? – Please keep the following…

– All payment documents from your Australian Host Organisation (definitely your final one!)

– Your Payment Summary (from your Australian Host Organisation)

– Any proof of address in Australia such as: Bank Statements, TFN statement, Lease agreement, Phone Bills, Utility Bills

What is Superannuation return? And why is it so super?

If you earn $450 or more per month in Australia your Host Organisation should be paying into a Superannuation Fund for you. They should be paying 9.25% of your basic earnings (in addition to your wages) into a nominated Superannuation Fund. Many companies will have a default Super Fund that they will pay into. Our tip is to try and have only ONE fund.

Remember: Superannuation can only be claimed when you have left Australia, your visa has expired or has been cancelled and you do not intend to return to work in Australia again.

Good news! You may be eligible to claim a tax return today!

If you worked in Australia during 2021 and paid tax, you could be due a tax refund. The good news is that you do not have to wait until 1 July to file your tax return. If you have left Australia or are planning to leave before 30 June 2022, you can file your tax return today. What's more, you can also claim your superannuation refund if your visa has expired or is expiring soon.
